Dawn laughs at that because it does sound like a set up for a dirty joke.
"A lawyer born from a family of butchers, now that's an interesting career shift."
But one she can kind of see, considering Foggy's love of food.
"He did actually. But more so it was that he had a crush on my best friend Donna and she always liked the movie Finding Nemo so as a way to flirt with her he would often call on a clownfish to visit her when they went swimming."
"It is, but I think that's partly why we bonded at Columbia. Neither of us came from a family of professionals or money. I like to think we didn't forget our roots."
At least he hopes that's always the case. He still considers himself that orphan first raised by a boxer, and he keeps an ear out for the cries that come from parts of the city that most ignore or forget.
"Ah." That method of flirting made him smile. "I have to say, that's pretty cute. Hope she appreciated the effort." Which isn't the same as reciprocating if she wasn't interested, but still, one could show appreciation for the intent even if not reciprocating the feeling. "Sets the bar for the rest of us when we're trying to impress our crushes."
"You're both very grounded men." She agrees, linking her arm around his so they can walk over to the next jellyfish tank. "I think that's part of what makes you such successful lawyers, you're the only two who feel honest."
"It did work." It's just sad that Donna and Garth didn't get to spend the rest of their lives together, but that's one of the many hazards of what they do. Not everyone can fight like they do and live long lives.
"We certainly try. There's enough lawyer jokes out there without adding to it. I might know of one more, but she doesn't work in New York." He did think that Jen Walters had the right mentality for a good lawyer, and a moral one, but that still wasn't batting great odds. Dawn had a point, and Matt wanted to buck the system and earn the privileged position he has these days.
He lets himself be steered, head tilted as he smiles. "There's a few more in this tank. Smaller, too. Babies?" Or adolescent at least.
At her question he laughs that turns into a covered up cough. "You think I have a set list of moves, Ms. Granger? Hm. Not sure whether I should confirm or deny."
Dawn's face lights up when Matt correctly guesses at the jellyfish inside the tank being smaller and she hugs him arm, laughing lightly.
"Correct! You really are good at this."
She doesn't buy his modest little chuckle though and she glances at him with a smirk, "I think you mostly get by on that easy charm of yours but yes. I suspect you've got a couple of set moves, Mr. Murdock. Not all of them PG rated."
"They sound a bit different, depending on size. Glad it was that they were young and not some miniature breed." He does love hearing her laugh, his smile creasing up the corners of his face hearing it. "Also not surprised if you wanted to linger looking at the cute baby ones."
Like he doesn't awe at little puppies or cats when he gets the chance. His nose can't abide living with a pet no matter how clean, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like playing with others who have them.
He lightly bumps against her at her teasing.
"I just like to treat my dates to the pleasurable life experiences they deserve. Which... sometimes involves inviting them into a ring of sorts. In your case, sometimes that ring's been literal, too." He does enjoy a good sparring match, then working out that tension afterwards.
"I can't help it, I find all types of babies cute." Humans and animals alike, Dawn definitely has a warm motherly vibe to her. She's always wanted kids of her own but it's a tough ask when you live the way they do.
"With a heavy emphasis on the pleasurable." She teases him further but is quick to laugh at herself as well. "Not that I'm any better, you know I love sparring with you."
And not just because he's a good opponent, but because the sexual tension that builds between them when she is able to pin him down is palpable.
"I dunno. Some of the human ones feel pretty wrinkly. But I guess once you get past that stage they get pretty cute." He hasn't done much mentoring himself, but Matt does have a soft spot for kids. Especially kids who are in tough places.
"There's a satisfaction in flexing one's skills against another. Be it on the mat, in the courtroom, or... elsewhere." He can't deny he enjoys the pleasure of a little heated competition, enough so that it remains when he loses as well as when he wins. Though he can absolutely be a bit smug when he wins. It's all in good fun.
[ooc: random question, do you want to play it like these two have already had sex or are still flirting their way towards it? I'm cool either way. XD ]
She laughs, a soft blush creeping across her cheeks that she wonders briefly if he can sense.
"Now now, don't start talking about flexing or else I'm going to get distracted away from the fish." She jokes although part of that is true, just thinking about his body is enough to make her feel warm.
[OOC: It's honestly on brand for Matt to have slept with her already, so I'm cool rolling with that if it's a preference. If there's no pref though I vote it not having happened yet so we can RP through it and say it's just been sexual tension so far. Any prefs on your end?]
"Right, I'd hate to detract from the fish. I've heard one might end up sleeping with them otherwise." He can sense the blush but he's a gentleman enough to not comment on it.
[ooc: Let's go with it hasn't happened yet, make him work for it a bit ;) ]
Again she laughs, he really is a charming man and it feels good to be able to laugh with someone again. It wasn't that long ago that she didn't think it would even be possible for her to do so.
"You can make it up to them by picking the next tank. Pick one that you think sounds interesting."
[OOC: Sounds good, they can both build towards it!]
It's not his preferred outing to be amongst fish, but he knows what it means for her to share something that was meaningful to her. He knows what it's like to lose friends and family, and clearly being at the aquarium reminds Dawn of those who created ripples in her own life. He might have been raised by a plethora of people, some with more questionable morals than others, but noticing things like this for what they are is a trait he hopes he never loses.
It's healing in it's own way for him, to be able to do something like this for someone else.
He leads them afterwards away from the jellyfish and towards the turtles.
"Maybe not teenage or mutant, but I might hold a soft spot for ninjas and late night pizza. And I think the snapping turtles get a bad rap."
"It's definitely on my late night rotations. I'm much better about cooking breakfast for myself than I am cooking when I get home at 3 or 4 in the morning for dinner." Matt even finds pleasure in cooking, especially since that way he knows he won't put anything into his food that tastes off to him. It also can be more frugal, though he tends to buy very good quality ingredients. "I just question my life choices when the local delivery places tell me they hadn't heard from me in awhile or know me by name." Which the Thai place near him absolutely has done.
He gives a small nod of his head. "Yeah, I have, actually. It's been awhile, but it tasted great when it was homemade. Maybe we'll have to make one sometime. Although... maybe I should know what you like on your pizza first before we bake one together. I'd hate for things to get contentious if you hated artichokes and one of mine got onto your side."
A part of her suspects he's also good at cooking breakfast seeing how many 'guests' have spent the night at his place but she bites her tongue, not wanting to derail the conversation towards innuendos again or have him think she's passing judgement. She isn't, she doesn't find anything wrong with a healthy sex drive, she just finds it amusing that Matt seems to think that there isn't gossip or tales about him out there amongst female heroes.
"I'd like that, I haven't made one from scratch in a long time because it's a lot of work for one person." But also because Dawn is the type to like sharing meals and recipes with people, food is one of her love languages.
"I'm actually pretty laid back about pizza toppings, I love all the classics but also don't mind some of the more unique ones. A few weeks ago I had a pretty good slice of butter chicken pizza from that place on 27th."
"Yeah, pizza is a lot to make for yourself. Between work and everything else, when I do cook unless it's a special occasion it's 30 minutes or under meals." Cooking for or with someone else he counts as a special occasion. "I like to think I've taken stir fry to new and interesting places because of it."
He makes a considering look when she mentions the butter chicken. "Never had that before, but I'd try it. Buffalo chicken on pizza isn't bad, so butter chicken could also work." Although he has to be careful on the buffalo. His sensitive tastebuds mean what's minimal spice to others is quite spicy for him. "I'm pretty open on toppings, too. I like a good amount of veggies, and pineapple is welcome to the table. Eggs though I don't quite get. I don't hate it, but I can easily leave them off."
There's a slight pause as she tilts her head to one side quizzically, "Eggs??? On pizza? Okay that I've never heard of or tried but I don't think I'd enjoy it."
It might work but it does seem like a rather odd choice to her.
"Is there anything food wise that you can't stand?"
He hears her tone and places one hand over his heart, holding his other one up like he's swearing himself in on the stand. "I swear that people do it. Even had someone use a quail eggs once, because I guess that made it fancy. It's done sunny side up. It's not bad but yeah, it's not really my thing."
He steps back because he can hear kids coming, and he lets them step in front to get a good view of the turtle tank. A small smile comes to his face as he hears them excitedly talking, naming each one.
"Oh, there's lots of things. But it's more how something is made. Processed foods, ingredients that aren't good quality, foods that are over-salted or too spicy or with a pound of sugar in them... I avoid all that when I can. I guess the overly processed foods are the worst, though. When Foggy eats Cheetos at his desk it turns my stomach."
He nods at the display in front of him. "I think the kids are excited." It's cute to hear.
"You know I never thought about that but I guess overly processed foods would hit you different than most seeing how you're more sensitive." She muses as she also moves aside for the kids, watching them all with a little smile.
"I don't enjoy the smell of Cheetos so I can only imagine how strong and awful it is for you."
The idea of Matt's abilities is both fascinating and somewhat overwhelming and it's hard for her to imagine just how many things he's had to work around or adjust to, things that she and everyone else takes for granted.
"Yeah. They're not as bad as hospitals, but Foggy snacking in close quarters is close." He says it with a teasing smile, because while his abilities do make things hard sometimes, he's not one to simply wallow over it. A lot of good comes from it, too. Or rather, he can do a lot of good. Some days are hard but it's still worth the while for him.
"On the flip side, it does make nice smells even more pleasant." He leans in to say quietly against her ear, "Like your perfume. It's a really nice scent. Some people end up reeking like they bathed in grandmother purses, so I'm glad yours doesn't."
The sudden closeness of him and the way his voice, pitched low and gentle, is whispered in her ear sends a strong pulse down her spine and one of her hands unconsciously flutters to her chest. She can feel heat rising to her cheeks, a faint blush forming and her smile grows.
"Oh. Thank you." She says, leaning in just a hair closer. "I bought it when I lived in Paris for a while."
He can sense the heat rising from her, the faint way she leans into him. Little elements that his senses can't help but detect. It warms him to know that these moments aren't unwanted on her end. He's many things, but he's not one to share personal space without encouragement.
"Yeah? I've never been to Paris." There are a lot of places he hasn't been. He's only really started traveling within the last few years. "What else did you take back from it? Please tell me the accent for awhile." The last part is said a bit teasingly.
He smiles in her direction, a lopsided grin, speaking back to her in French. His accent is nowhere near as good as hers, but otherwise it's passable. "Maybe you should speak French more often."
Dropping back to English he gives a small shrug of his shoulders. "I know mine's not nearly as good. Been awhile since I spoke it, I'm a little rusty." The last time had been with Elektra long ago. He uses Spanish much more frequently. Still, multiple languages had been part of the training started by Stick that he never fully abandoned.
She isn't expecting him to speak French back to her, and certainly not as smoothly as he does, and she leans back a little to laugh. It's melodious and warm and she gives him a playful little swat to the bicep.
"Matt Murdock, is there anything you can't do?" She teases, obviously pleased by his little surprise.

There's something about eating a big greasy pizza after busting up bad guys that feels extra satisfying.
