Jazz and classical, mostly. Maybe we can trade music recommendations at Josie's later.
[Matt can feel the slow shift in time by the temperature in the city. Summer is always hot as hell, but as early afternoon shifts into late, the heat is reaching it's peak. He's looking forward to the sun setting and the air going a few degrees cooler. He's looking forward to what else the night brings, too. A suit change from what's appropriate in the courtroom to what is now a crime. An ear out to hear the cries that need help. After a frustrating day of legal battles, maybe he's looking forward a little too much to problems that he can solve with his fists. Nowadays, that concern is always in the back of his mind.
He might be blind, but he can sense lines that he doesn't want to cross. The woman who's agree to join him at Josie's before the bar opens might know something about that, too.
Matt is gathering people around him to help fight against Fisk's task force and martial fist around the city's throat. Wanda could be an amazing asset to that team. It's not just her powers though that makes Matt want to speak with her in person. He genuinely wants to know how she's doing. For understandable reasons she's seemed to keep herself distant from the world at large. It's asking a lot of her to rejoin it now. He wants to make certain she's all right. She's far more powerful than he is, but Matt always has a desire to protect and defend those that matter to him.
Inside the bar the chairs are still on the tables, the floor is swept. Josie's in the back getting the kitchen ready for the day. She might be housing rebellion meetings, but she's still meeting the legal requirements to serve food with drinks. Matt sits at the bar on one of the stools, dressed in his suit from the office. His tie is a little loosened, but otherwise he's smartly dressed. It belies the bruises on his face and knuckles, the bags beneath his eyes hidden somewhat by his glasses. He's deep in thought when he hears a familiar heartbeat entering through the back door as he's instructed. Rising to his feet, his head tilts in Wanda's direction. A warm smile crosses his face, Matt doesn't do anything half-assed. Even greeting someone.]
Hey. Glad you could make it. Any trouble on the way over?
[ Wanda has been ensure of her place in the world and how exactly she fits in with all of that. She's set herself apart. She's not sure if there are people looking for her to hold her accountable for Westview, but she's spent her time trying to learn and understand her magic. It's so much bigger than she's thought. She's capable of so much more to the point that sometimes even she's unsettled by the magnitude.
She can't explain what's drawn her to Matt's call to arms. Maybe she thinks helping people will heal something in her. Maybe she's tired of being alone. Either way, it's how she finds herself walking into the dive bar. She wears jeans and a red zip up hoodie with the hood up to try and downplay her appearance.
She sees Matt rise to greet her with a warm smile. It's so genuine that it breaks up some of the ice in her chest. She smiles back even if he can't see it. ]
No trouble. The beauty of New York is that everyone minds their business.
[While he can't discern how she looks visually, he can sense her general form through heat signatures. He can pick up on what fabrics she's wearing thanks to the sounds the cloth makes as she moves. He listens intently to the sound of her voice, while trying not to be invasive about anything else. Matt has always been aware that his ability to pick up certain sensory things isn't always welcome, and he's learned to focus his attention in certain areas unless he needs to do more. Some things he can't help, like hearing someone's heartbeat, but he tries to be as respectful as he can.]
That's true. It's a big and busy enough city that everyone can be the center of their own world.
[His tone is a little teasing, although truthfully, often it's just safer for people to mind their own business. Especially these days. Raising one's head and voice up means getting noticed, and it's easy for that to be taken the wrong way by the wrong people.
He slides one of the stools out, then lightly touches her arm as he moves around her to get behind the bar.]
Grab a seat. Want anything to eat or drink? There's non-alcoholic things if it's too early for booze. ... it's really good to have you here, Wanda. It's been awhile.
It has. A lot has changed in the city while I've been gone.
[ It looks the same at face value, but she can feels the difference. She can feel how Fisk has begun to take hold on the city. She takes a seat on the stool and studies the bar. It's a bar with character. She tries to imagine it in full swing with people and conversation and music. It feels like an echo of another life to her when she thinks of all the things she's missed out on.
She smiles wryly when he goes behind the bar. She rests her arms against the bar and leans forward me. ]
Surprise me. What kind of drink do you think I'll like?
I'm sure it has changed a lot, especially right now. Living here it's harder for me to notice the smaller changes day to day, unless favorite place closes down. Then suddenly a few years will go by and all the changes hit all at once. ... do you miss it? Living in New York. Or is it too soon to tell?
[Matt can't imagine living anywhere else, but then, he hasn't lived anywhere else. Hell's Kitchen feels like a part of him, the buildings akin to his very bones. He's only recently in the past few years started to even leave the state on business. While he enjoys experiencing new places, and wants to explore more, New York still feels like a homing beacon for him. He knows it's a very different situation for Wanda, given what happened to her original home.
Behind the counter he finds two squat glasses and a bottle of whiskey. Not the one that he and Foggy would drink after a victory - that was being saved for when Fisk is taken down = but a good blend, nonetheless. He offers it to her to examine before pouring any into the glass.]
You don't strike me as someone who needs a lot of garnishes. Although if I'm wrong, I can manage a decent mixed drink, too.
I miss it. I was more upstate than in the city though. It was quieter up there. I think maybe I would have liked it here more.
[ The compound upstate had allowed their team privacy to gel and train together. There had been times when she did visits to the city, and it always left her fascinated.
Now she wanders mostly from place to place. She has a cabin out in the mountains, but she doesn't really have a home. He offers her a glass of whiskey. She picks up the glass and stares at the amber liquid as she swirls it around. Like she's trying to divine something in it. ]
I've never really had much whiskey, but I'm open to trying it.
In theory I get the appeal of quiet, but I don't think I could handle it in practice. Too used to the city. Even when the noise gets overwhelming, that's better than feeling... disconnected, I guess?
[Matt has certainly felt lonely, and isolated. It's possible to be alone even when surrounded. Yet he thinks those times would have been even worse if he was remote and didn't have the pulse of other lives around him. He's gotten used to living with their rhythms as a background.
He pours his own glass next, lifting it up to her in a silent cheers before taking a sip.]
It burns on the way down, but there's a sweet aftertaste. I grew up on whiskey, so that might be part of my fondness for it. I won't be insulted if you're not a fan, though.
