Leave Matt a message below!

It had been years, probably. The last time Kate set up a foot in her parents' walk-in wardrobe, she had been a teenager 'borrowing' pieces from her mother while she still figured out her own fashion style. There had a been a time when that was one of Kate's favorite places to play at, spending whole afternoons trying on shoes and dresses or coats that buried her scrawny little body.

It's no wonder that even to this day she enjoys dressing up so much.

But things had changed. After her mother's short-term engagement with Jack, her father's old clothes had completely disappeared. Kate was well aware that her mother had stored quite a few as time settled and her mourning didn't feel as raw, only leaving a few of his clothes in the wardrobe at Kate's request. It was the attic where Kate finally found those boxes.

They smelled a little old, Kate had to admit it, but at least Matt's nose wasn't as sensible right now. She gathered some pants and old jeans. T-shirts and button-ups, socks. A vest and a jacket. Armani. They still felt so soft under her touch.

Making a quick stop in her old bedroom, she found the bottles of cologne her father had never finished. Unscrolling the caps had once given her comfort, like time travelling through her senses to a time when her father was still around. It made her feel closer to him, even if he was gone. Was it weird for Kate to dress Matt and make him smell like her dad? She didn't want to think too much into it, because the daddy issues jokes would be summoned like crazy. In all honesty, she was just being practical. Trying to make the clothes smell less 'stored'.

Satisfied by her choices, she carried the pile of clothes down the hallway, only to spot Matt wearing the bathrobe, wandering around with Lucky.

"Hey!" Worried as she was for a second, she could't help but laugh at the pair. "What are you guys doing? Have you finally adopted a guide dog?"

It should be wrong. She should be feeling guilty about this. Because, truth be told, Kate could't remember the last time she enjoyed herself this much. There was something so relieving about seeing Matt so relaxed, having fun with Lucky and getting to know her old home. Her current home, if you thought about it. But it should be awful, right? Because she was enjoying it while Matt depended on her.

No, Matt had still surprised her by teaming up with Lucky and daring to go have a wander around. Matt Murdock wasn't letting his disability define him or confine him to waiting for her help. Besides, when was the last time he had told her that he felt good? The shower, the sleep, it had done wonders for him at a time when she'd think he'd be terrified of how his powers had not come back yet.

Maybe they're on the right path, though. Maybe this is what Matt actually needs to get better.

"Oh, yeah. I found my dad's old clothes and picked a little bit of everything for you to choose from," she explained as she readjusted her hold on a pile of clothing that almost reached her chin. "I'm pretty sure they're your size, but you can check if they're comfortable or not." Would he go out then? He would probably need her to guide him still and she was happy to play the part. "But if you're still tired you can always go take another nap." He had been dozing off on the way there. "Bet that Lucky will be happy to keep you company."

"Yeah, I'm a little hungry myself," Kate had to admit. It was so refreshing though, just how honest Matt was being about how he felt and what he needed. Daredevil normally pushed all that aside to simply focus on what had to be done. But this? They were actually communicating here. She couldn't be prouder.

"Damn, you're playing with fire here, Mr.Murdcok!" And she was living for it! The sad thing was that, even though she had been stocking her kitchen with things like oat milk in case he visited, Kate didn't have as many snacks as she did in her own apartment. If only she knew this would happen!

"Let's leave the clothes here for later," she told him as she walked him few steps to the side, leaving the pile on top of a sofa and encouraging him to do the same. "We can go have something real obscene for breakfast and then if you're still sleepy, you can have that nap."

Returning to his side, Kate reached out to take Matt's hand in hers. "Wanna have some sugary cereal and pancakes with syrup or go big time and do brunch?"

She knew that despite of Matt's almost modest enthusiasm, he was just trying to distract himself from something even Kate worried about. What if they lost their leader? Matt would always be there to guide them, she had no doubt about it. But he was such a valuable player, few people fought like he does.

But most importantly, how would this affect his normal life? Kate would be devastated if for some reason she suddenly lost her talents. Her hands. What then?

She needed to believe. Matt said it himself, this isn't his first rodeo. Claire had even mentioned it: there's a high chance that this is a mixture of that head injury, stress and exhaustion.

"Why? Are you questioning my culinary abilities now?" Matt had good reasons to be wary of them. But Kate still looped her arm around his, guiding him to the kitchen as Lucky followed, barking in excitement. "Burgers are going to be our main course."

In all honesty, it was probably Matt's influence what actually made Kate feel excited over giving this a shot. Normally, and if he allowed it, she was his sous chef. Of course, if you understand the term 'sous chef' as chopping some veggies unevenly, handing him something or stirring something else. "Yeah. I've never cooked before for you because I knew you'd sound this skeptical." And because compared to his, her abilities were very limited.

She likes to show off she is great at things, ok?

Which speaks for itself over how much more comfortable she felt around Matt these days. Confident enough to even share her short-comings.

"You've clearly never lived before if you haven't had burgers for breakfast. Or in the middle of the night. What about cold pizza in the morning? Fries with your ice cream?" Now that Matt was comfortable and being lovebombed by Lucky, Kate moved around the kitchen cabinets. They indeed were not stocked as they used to be while her mother lived in the place, but there was still plenty to pick from. "But, before I spoil the Kate special and since this is the only time when I'm gonna be able to give you stuff that's unhealthy..."

She came to him, surely Matt would recognise the sounds of her opening a packet of something.

"You ever tried Takis?" There's no way he's tried Takis.

"Oh, I bet you're full of questions, Counselor," Kate teased back, but it was obvious that it was in a goood-humored way.

Since moving back to the penthouse, Kate had kept her usual diet of keeping things simple or lots of takeaway. At least once a week she ordered pizza from Herman's Hearty Slice. She had explained she was house-sitting and would be away for a while probably, but the Herman's team was as sweet as ever. Every pizza arrived at the penthouse with a paper bag full of bread with a specially recipe made just for Lucky. Doggie-safe pizza crust.

Her dog adored those treats.

While Kate still figured where her mom kept certain things in the kitchen and where she had stored others herself, Kate kept an eye on Matt and his Taki tasting. "Not bad? You have to admit--" But Matt was already coughing, the spice clearly making itself known. Kate came to him with a glass of water. "Terrible but they taste so good, don't they?" Making her point, she stole one from Matt's hand, wolfing it down in two bites. "They're clearly the side dish! We have hot cheetos for the burger."

They were cheesier and went better with the cheddar.

Ground beef, eggs, cheese. Kate balanced them in her arms as she pushed the door to the refrigerator closed with her hips. She stopped only briefly and not because Matt had just because he had placed her under the spotlight when it came to dog treats. But because he made a very good point.

Sometimes, in the solitude of her bedroom, she sometimes closed her eyes and counted her steps. She touched Lucky's face. Touched her own. She tried to connect with Matt and how he saw the world, how he experienced it. Now he was experiencing how she tasted it and smelled it.

It was hard not to feel guilty about it, but a smile spread on her lips at the thought.

"We are having Melona for our breakfast's dessert," she pointed out, suddenly sounding so very excited as she moved towards the stove. They needed to go out shopping later. Kate would, at least. She'd raid a shop to get every stupid snack she enjoyed just for Matt to taste it.

"I bet Foggy would be proud of you right now, trying all these things." While the pan heated up, Kate looked around for the bread. On the way, she stopped by Matt's side, stealing another taki and then holding one ear his lips.

"Is there anything you've ever wanted to try?"

"There's gonna be time to worry about acid reflux. But this is your chance to try everything you normally can't." Kate argued, firm on her belief that Matt was going through temporary thing. She'd rather take that. She'll take screwing completely with his stomach and then mourn not being able to share unhealthy snacks with him, only to watch him recover his powers. "Of course I have the honeydew melon, it's the best flavor by far. I've got it in popsicles."

And he had to be the one person in the world she didn't feel coy about while having a popsicle. Like eating bananas in public.

Honestly, she was delighted with this. Being able to feed him the things she enjoyed and Matt gladly taken them without the usual bitching. Pleased to watch him take it, Kate grabbed another Taki and moved on, loving every second of how Matt remembered every thing he liked to eat before his accident took more than just his sight.

"Hey, I'm not judging! I think it's pretty cool you can get to experience again what all of those things taste like. Because, just so you know, I'm ordering all of those after breakfast. And whatever else you can think of," she mentioned as she started flattening the beef mince into patty's, having already mixed it with a few of the spices that stocked her mom's kitchen. "And you know what else we are having later? Instant noodles. You have to at least experience once a meal that only needs a kettle to be done."

As the pan started making frizzling noises, Kate also started the grill. "What? Matt, no. You always cook for me." She pointed out as she crossed the kitchen again. She stopped once she was behind him, wrapping her arms around his neck and briefly hugging him from behind. "This is my turn to pamper you a little."

"You're allowed to call in sick more than once." Would Matt be doing better tomorrow? She couldn't tell. But maybe this was some blessing in disguise? Not simply a warning for him to take things easier, but actually some time for him to have the recovery he had been denying himself for weeks now. "And yeah, exactly! This doesn't need to be a shitty break. You can make the most out of it and enjoy the things and places that are normally too much for you."

"Oh, come on, stop talking as if you were old." Older than her, sure. But his metabolism? It could sure take anything.

Or so Kate kept telling herself, stubborn about how the age gap between them both didn't really mean all that much. Matt is simply too obstinate. Believing that enjoying the things he did as a child is something that he should feel ashamed off or that there was an abyss between them that, in some cases, mattered.

She squeezed him a little in that brief hug, burying her face on his shoulder as she enjoyed the way Matt leaned back into her. Pulling away, she headed straight for the drawer where she kept some of Lucky's treats, instantly getting an excited bark out of the pup as Lucky left Matt's side to claim the dog biscuits. He caught a couple as Kate tossed them to him, but she handed Matt the bag before she headed back to take care of their breakfast.

"Normally I like to cook quick stuff. A lot of packet stuff," she admitted. "But mom enjoyed doing homely meals, specially when I was a kid." She remembered the caceroles fondly. "She hired a chef sometimes if she was too busy at work or if she was planning to throw a party. But mom won't say no to burgers or even homemade pizza."

"No. But being shot multiple times, beaten, cut and barely getting any sleep? Just because we had a few really good hours of shut eye that doesn't mean you've recovered, Matt." For once, Kate sounded deadly-serious about something. Because, honestly, those hours of sleep had done wonders for them both, but they probably needed an actual bed and a good night's sleep. Hell, Matt's face might not been as swollen as it was a few hours ago, but he still had some nasty bruises.

What was he going to tell his girlfriend about them?

"I think you do enough excercise to make sure you don't get any extra weight." And even though Kate's old coaches would have teared their hair off if they saw how Kate eats these days, between her metabolism and her strict routine of jumping over rooftops? That was sure keeping those extra-calories at bay.

With the burgers now on the grill and the bacon fried, the scents of their breakfast starter filling the room. "Delicious sodium," she corrected as Lucky pressed his paws to Matt's hips, trying to reach the bag of treats. Kate cut the bread into thick slices. "Oh, that's hard to pick. I really liked the stew-ish ones. Or sausage casseroles! The gravy really does the trick."

"I'm just sayin'. Maybe you could start keeping the mortal wounds to a once a week deal." Giving her tone, she was clearly teasing him though. Because Kate had to accept this was good enough, she couldn't ask more of him. After all, that would make her a big time hypocrite, considering Kate herself wasn't someone to slow down despite of how her body demanded it at times.

"Are you saying that fried and sugary goods are not really at the top of the food pyramid? Damn..." Kate's diet was not always awful, but she certainly indulged now that her career as an athlete was not her main worry. However, she won't admit it to him what a good influence he's been to her culinary taste lately.

With the cheese now melting over the sizzling beef, Kate toasted the bread and got the cheetos out. Now, it was time to take care of those fried eggs!

"Who knows? Maybe I'll surprise you with one next..."

"I love how he now gives hug on commands," Kate agreed, sounding delighted. "It's the cutest thing."

Even as Kate cracked those eggs - which of course didn't turned out as perfect as they normally did, not the day she was company! -, it was hard not to be distracted by just how Matt was all over the place with Lucky today. Normally, her friend adored the dog, but Kate could tell that he struggled with Lucky's smell. Today? The ruffling and scratches.

... Is it possible to be jealous of a dog?

"My friend Grills," Kate started, "Not Greer, she's a friend from college." Kate quickly clarified. "Grills is one of the LARPers. The firefighter who found Clint's Ronin suit?" She's sure she's told Matt about that a long time ago. "Anyway, he's so talented when it comes to teaching tricks. He did this thing... It made Lucky dance. I swear, I don't know how he did it. And he made it look so easy!"

"Matt, when was the last time you had churros!" Kate sounded shocked, almost as if she was struggling to figure how someone could miss out on so may great things. As she did, she was starting to plate up her burgers. The bread, now toasted, was warm and crispy on the surface. She placed the beef later, with the cheese she had melted on it at last minute. The eggs went next and she could already tell they would be pretty runny after the first bite. Opening the cheetos, she cracked a few and sprinkled it on top.

"I'm tempted to put on some sriracha like I normally would. But that might be a little too much for you." She placed the plate next to Matt. "You want ketchup or something? Drinks?"
