That's so not what that means! The audacity, Matt. Quit putting words in my mouth. [She sounded both shocked and holding back a laugh.] I mean me and my friends are such a mess while you're a respectable lawyer that wears a tie at all times and listens to jazz.
Exactly. We are a team. And if you force me to dance with that evil walrus to distract him I'm never forgiving you.
I think part of that does come with age, though. Not always, but I remember being much more of a mess in my early twenties than I am now. Or maybe now I'm just a mess in other ways. Either way, I bet your friends are nice.
I'll find a way to speak with her that doesn't leave you hanging. I promise.
What were you like in your early twenties, Matt? [She instantly smiles at the mental image of him maybe in something less formal, acting a little goofier maybe?] Ok, once this is over? Big night out and drinks. I'm introducing you to my friends. Then we can go, totally shiftfaced, to feed the ducks in the harbor. Someone's gotta tell them that Marshall is good.
Good. Whatever happes, tell her that even you can tell that she looks tired.
A little cockier, a little less cynical. A lot more figuring out how I was going to get anything done. Law firms don't just land in someone's lap - or well, not when you have no money or firm to inherit. I did a corporate internship while going to law school and quickly figured out even if that's where the money was it wasn't for me.
Did you and Foggy partied like crazy or were you guys all business? [It could go bothw ways, really. Because she had met the older, more mature version of them both and had seen what a pair of fun dorks they had been together. But then, hard work was clearly what got them there.] Wish I had met you back then. You think you would have liked me? [Well, shit, that sounds so wrong.] I mean, I could see all of us hanging and stuff.
[She would have melted for him. Like she does now.]
There's way cheaper ones. But I'd like to think this will fuck with her head.
There was some partying, especially at Columbia. Of course I would have liked you. You're a good person, Kate. We might not have had that many overlapping interests, but I think we'd get along.
I do wonder if she and Fisk sleep easily. I hope they don't.
Well, aside from the vigilante work, not sure if we even have many interests in common now. But I like to learn about the stuff you're interested in.
That makes two of us. [She considers things.] I honestly don't understand how some people can be evil. How do you live with yourself doing the stuff they do?
Boxing, maybe. Even if your type of boxing isn't the same as mine. We both like to read, don't we? You're right though, our interests don't overlap much.
I don't understand it, either. Unfortunately, I do know what it feels like to hate and want to hurt. I like to think though that I don't want to hurt people who don't deserve it. I try not to use violence first, period. [He does not always succeed, and it makes him worry and wonder about himself.]
Kick-boxing? I'm sure we can meet in some middle-ground, Mr. Ninja. [They still owe each other a sparring session.] You read more than I do lately, but yeah. Guess you can really get along even if you don't always share the same hobbies. Like, the love for a dog.
Matt, you know that what you do is totally different...
The neon lights were how I could originally afford it. They shaved off the price because of them, but the light from them obviously doesn't keep me awake. ... I guess it does mean a lot to me. After my dad died, I didn't have a home. So when I could finally afford to make myself one, yeah, it was a pretty cool feeling.
Some of the time, of course I do. Other times I regret that I don't feel regret.
[She's probably have to cover her head with a pillow to sleep on his couch, but frankly he doesn't care. Still, Kate won't bring it up to keep Matt from worrying.] Well, it is pretty roomy. I love the stairs too, by the way. But yeah, that makes sense. Please tell me you threw a house-warming party.
[He plans on letting her use the bedroom while he takes the sofa, as he usually does when people stay over.] The stairs help with staying in shape, I'll grant that. Nah, I didn't do anything special when I moved in. I just ordered take out from Nirvana's next door and sat on my mattress to eat it because the bedframe and sofa hadn't come in yet. Did you throw a housewarming party when you moved into your apartment?
How did you pick your furniture? Did your friends help you? You had something in mind and asked for help? [She knows he won't take it personally if she asks all these questions, but she's genuinelly so curious about how the world works from his perspective.] No wonder you love that place so much. As for me, yeah. It wasn't anything crazy. More like a sleepover and lots of drinks.
Matt, nobody can blame you for that one. Anyone who loved Foggy would have done the same thing.
Foggy helped me pick things out. Design-wise, none of it really means anything to me, you know? It's not like I knew anything about styles when I lost my sight as a kid. I just said I wanted things simple, comfortable, and that it all had to be placed where I could easily move around and navigate the space. So I got to feel the items but he mostly picked them out, then I had a say in where things were placed so it made sense to me when I walked around. Which is also why an apartment is easiest, honestly. It's not a ton of space that I have to memorize.
I can absolutely see you having a party to celebrate, so I'm not surprised. I hope you had fun.
Yeah, that makes sense. Though, you have to admit that adding a slide to your apartment would have been a nice gift for your inner child. [Has she ever been tempted to get one? She'll never tell.] Wait, why you memorize it? I thought you could tell exactly where everything is.
Yeah, it was chill and a lot of fun. Just being surrounded by friends, you know?Nothing too crazy.
Of course not. But if anyone had hurt you... I bet that even Foggy would have been tempted. It's not like anyone can think straight in a time like that.
Where would the slide land? In the bed or the bath? Yeah, I memorize the steps between places, and where things are on the counters and things like that. I also have everything that I can labeled in case something does get out of order. On most days it's for the sake of appearances, but when I'm sick or injured, I'm genuinely just blind, Kate. My senses don't work as well if at all. I don't want to walk into my coffee table when I'm already not feeling well because I never bothered to count steps.
That sounds like the perfect night.
Maybe. It's complicated. If I haven't figured it out yet in twenty years, maybe it's not something that anyone ever will totally.
Oh, the options! I was thinking of something from upstairs down to the living room, but the bed sounds like such a good option. [She's never seen Matt sick before, but him explaining how that messed with his senses made so much sense.] Yeah, that's a good point. Even I bump on stuff when I'm feeling sick, bet it must be really tricky for you. [A beat.] You know, I saw this new app that kinda scans the place and tells you where things are. Maybe it would come handy with like one airpod, to let it guide you.
Is that your type of perfect night?
Exactly. You shouldn't let it eat your brain up. I don't think its the kinda question with a right or wrong answer.
Yeah. I get some people telling me that I'm not really blind or visually impaired. They don't believe me when I say that the labels and memorization and other tricks genuinely help.
A lowkey night with friends? Yeah. Is it not yours?
Probably. I don't do well with unsolved questions, as you can tell. I was taught that you have to still wrestle with them.
In their defense, Mr.Murdock, the jury should notice that nobody that ever saw you fight would believe that you can't see. As for the rest? They can suck it.
Yeah, it probably is. I... I used to think that I really loved big and improvised plans. Like, not knowing where the night will take you and oops, we just woke up in Mexico. But now? I think it's more the company thah the plans.
